Supercomputing Usage Policies

As a condition of use of the Fulton Supercomputing Lab facilities, the user agrees:

  1. To respect the privacy of other users; for example, users shall not intentionally seek information on, obtain copies of, or modify files, tapes, or passwords belonging to other users, or misrepresent others.
  2. No user shall give their username and/or password to ANYONE (including family members). This is a strict policy for the protection of all users.
  3. To respect the legal protection provided by copyright and license to programs and data; for example, users shall not make copies of a licensed computer program to avoid paying additional license fees or to share with other users.
  4. Supercomputing resources are provided for work within the University. Supercomputing resources may not be used for outside commercial work or other activities not related to University work and academic research.
  5. To respect the integrity of computing systems; users shall not intentionally develop or use programs that harass other users or infiltrate a computer or computing system and/or damage or alter the software components of a computer or computing system. In other words, hacking activities are strictly prohibited, including network scanning and attempting to access any systems which you are not specifically authorized to use.
  6. To respect the financial structure of a computing system; for example, users shall not intentionally develop or use any unauthorized mechanisms to alter or avoid the resource scheduler and batch processing systems.
  7. To respect the rights of other users; for example, users shall not engage in private or public behavior that creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment for other users based on their race, sex, color, religion, creed, age, marital status, handicap, or veteran status.
  8. To not leave login sessions unattended. Users are responsible for anything that happens while he or she is logged in. If the user logs in and leaves their computer unattended, he or she is still responsible for what goes on.

Supercomputing accounts are privileges to be used in conjunction with and in support of BYU courses and research activities. The use of supercomputing resources for the storage and transmission of pornographic materials (including both images and text) is a violation of the Honor Code. Such abuse will be referred to the Honor Council Office. The BYU Computer Network Patron Policy states, in part:

"Students will most likely be asked to leave the University when any of the following conditions have been substantiated: Any of the materials are pornographic, erotic or indecent or when materials or associated expressions of conduct are offensive and, in the sole discretion and judgment of the University, are inconsistent with the principles of the Church and the BYU Honor code."

The Supercomputing Center reserves the right to monitor your account and associated computer activities. Abuse in any form will result in suspension of your account(s). If an abuse involves illegal activity, appropriate authorities will be notified.
